Because I’m in Bali at the moment (did I mention that?) I feel like this summer has given me more than my fair share of sunshine. For an autumn lover like me it might even all be getting a bit much.
I’ve always been a bit pale. Not ghostly pale, but I’m not someone that tans. Ever. Honestly I count it as a miracle if I get even the faintest tan line. Even my (ridiculously frequent) burn turns back to pale. Because of this, I’m pretty damn good at my SPFs and UVA/Bs. I’ve mentioned before that I won’t buy a moisturiser or foundation if it doesn’t have at least SPF15, rain or shine. But what else do I do to keep safe and well, all year round?
WATER | You already know my love for the wet stuff. With the sun beating down it’s now more important than ever to get your fill. On super hot days I like to get a litre down before I leave the house. Trust me. Your body will thank you.
Suncream | Now I’m not your mother so I’m not going to tell you to wear your suncream and then paste it onto you so white that even the most tanned person looks ghostly. What I’m going to do instead is just subtly nudge a bottle of SPF30 towards you with the reminder that suncream does not stop you tanning. It does, however, stop you contracting nasty, painful burns, getting horrendous wrinkles, and much much worse.
SPF Makeup | I tend to go bare faced at the beach, simply because suncream, water and mascara aren’t the best of friends. However, the beach is not the only sunny pass-time. Sometimes we need a little makeup to feel our best. Think lunches out, a little shopping or a glamorous poolside session. This is where products like B. Confident CC Cream with SPF45* come in handy. Not only does it provide a lovely amount of coverage but it also protects your gorgeous face against the sun’s harmful rays and, to top it all off, is non greasy. Win. Clarins’ SPF40 Day Screen is also on my list of SPF faves. Wear this under your everyday makeup and bam, SPF40 as well as a full, happy face of makeup. Magic.
Lips | Your lips are also susceptible to sunburn. To keep them hydrated as well as safe get your hands on a good protecting lip balm and top it up regularly. Weirdly, its something everyone remembers when off skiing, but not when hitting the beach!
Hair | Probably the most forgotten of all sun safety tips. Look after your scalp. Ideally get yourself a nice hat (thanks, mum) but if that really isn’t your style, like me, grab yourself some serum designed specifically for your hair. You’d use heat protect before straightening, wouldn’t you? A burnt scalp is the worst of the worst.
Eyes | I don’t need to tell you to wear sunglasses in bright sunlight, but remember that around pools and other bodies of rippling water, the rays can get you even in the shade. Look after your eyes and they will definitely look after you!
What if it all goes wrong? | Sadly, this outcome is more than likely. I burn so often that you might as well start calling me toast. And burning hurts. I’ve raved before about my love of Sudocrem, but honestly this little pot can soothe and aid a multiple of sins. A good aftersun is obviously a perfect antedote, but for me there’s nothing better than a thick layer of Sudocrem before bed. Use it on face, body, lips and even scalp. Also works wonders on spots and even the odd bite. Its magic in a pot.
