I didn’t think that I would be able to make Durham’s Lumiere festival this year, owing to my little move abroad. Thankfully, the stars aligned and I found myself in Durham just in time!
Lumiere is one of my favourite things about Durham (which is saying something…) The first festival being held ‘before my time’ in 2009, Lumiere has been run every two years since. I have to be honest, I absolutely adored 2013, but 2015 has absolutely stolen the show!
I’m a sucker for anything pretty at night. Bonfire night is my all time favourite night of the year and as I was in Paris this year I didn’t even see any fireworks. Properly gutted about it.
Lumiere was the perfect antidote. Pretty lights, weird installations and a lovely romantic night time stroll around Durham with Ollie: perfection!
One of my favourite bits this year was ‘the cloud.’ A huge cloud of individual lightbulbs that could be turned on and off individually, by the public, by just pulling on each rain-cord. Interactive art is the absolute best and I felt like a child pulling the light on and off (such a loser…)
A highlight was perhaps the projection of the French flag on Durham Cathedral between light shows. A fitting tribute from one of my homes to another. The Cathedral is the jewel on the Lumiere crown and is not to be missed by any account! Absolutely stunning music and light show.
Lumiere will come to London from 14th – 17th January 2016!
