Last week I was lucky enough to be invited by Olay for an evening of drinks and skincare fun overlooking London for the launch of their new SPF30 moisturising day cream. Olay SPF15 Fluid was actually my first ever moisturiser, forever ago, and I’ve always had a soft spot for them. I even use their Radiant Glow SPF15 moisturiser at the moment as my morning day cream, pre-makeup. It’s a brand that often gets overlooked, in my opinion. They’ve done so so well at marketing their products to older women that they’re often dismissed by young people – a mistake.
Using an SPF on your skin from the moment you’re born is key, and Olay know that. Everyone else just needs to get on board.
Anyway, I dragged Ollie to Victoria Embankment last Thursday to see what Olay had in store for this summer, and it was a glorious evening. We were met with a glass of prosecco, shown around the rooftop bar, and made to feel at home immediately. I always think highly of a place with free fro-yo on tap, so I certainly wasn’t disappointed.
While the sun was still shining we ran to the side of the balcony and admired the view. London on a summer’s evening is really something! As a wonderful team passed out canapés, we sipped our prosecco and formulated an action plan: Ollie was eyeing up the fro-yo and I was keen to take a photo with the flower laden swing seat.
Olay had pulled out all the stops to show off their new SPF30 – a real highlight was the little ‘how-to’ stall that had been set up. We were shown how damaging rays can still pass through our moisturisers and were given a few tips on how to stay skincare safe in the sun. I adored the little half-painted apples. The brown sides had been left to the elements unprotected, and the white side had been sealed with a layer of their SPF30. In 2018, protection from pollutants is an absolute must!
Armed with a raspberry daiquiri each, we set to work snapping photos and soaking in the atmosphere. A weird highlight was seeing a girl that had been to my school, all be it a few years above me, snapping those insta shots. Surreal, to say the least.
The night also gave Ollie his first daiquiri and we gave it a glowing report, fyi.
Most important about this event, however, was the confidence it gave me in some of the things I already swear by.
As I say, Olay has got a bit of a reputation for being primarily targeted at women of a certain age (vom – what a phrase) and with it has the use of things like SPFs. A lot of the great day creams out there completely neglect sun protection in favour of looking cool (or something, idk). While they may moisturise your face perfectly, they can’t protect it. Some skincare, I’m looking at you, acid toners, shouldn’t be used at all without being followed by an SPF.
Sun protection isn’t just about preventing wrinkles anymore, it’s about staying safe and looking after your skin. Why wait until you’re a brand’s target audience to start? Protect yourself from harm, like you would with wearing sunglasses for your eyes or slapping on factor 50 on your yearly trip to Lanzarote.
